This is Jindai cedar, a buried tree. Jindai is a general term for wood that has been stored underground for a long period of time, and has turned black as minerals from the soil have seeped into the wood.
This Jindai cedar soba choko can be used as a cup or drinking glass, as moisture does not penetrate the wood by wiping off the lacquer.
Please refrain from using with hot water.

To make it practical, it is finished with a moisture-repellent lacquer.

Jindai cedar is a soft wood that is prone to minor scratches.
